History of Indian Red Cross

The Kottayam district branch 0f Indian Red Cross Society was formed in the year 1957, the office of the Kottayam district branch was then housed in its own building near district hospital Kottayam, the foundation stone of this building was laid by Hon. Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi and the building was inaugurated Governor of Kerala Sri. V.V Giri. The first president of Kottayam District branch was Sri. George Thomas IAS, District Collector and Sri. Abraham Eapen Palampadam was the founder and first Hon. General Secretary. He was followed by eminent leaders like Ms. Anna John, Mr.Ildephonse M.C., Mr. C.J. John Akkara, Mr. K T Ouseph, Adv. Sunil C Kurian, Mr. Babu S Prasad. Now under the Hon.Chairmanship of Mr. Joby Thomas, Kottayam Red Cross is leading the humanitarian voluntary activities to the vulnerable societies in Kottayam District.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

In the last 65 years, Kottayam Red Cross has been in the fore-front in alleviating suffering of people caused by either natural disaster or other calamities. The Kottayam District branch of Indian Red Cross Society, under the president ship of District Collector of Kottayam rendering Humanitarian voluntary services to the society in providing relief to victims of natural calamities besides running several charitable activities providing free medical aid to the poor, specially to those residing in vulnerable areas. The Red Cross has always been a volunteered movement deriving its strength from material and support given by philanthropists. Kottayam Red Cross has volunteered in increasing the capacity in disaster preparedness and disaster response in disaster prone zones of Kottayam District. During this period Kottayam Red Cross has acquired land and built its own 4 storied 16000 sq. ft. Red Cross Tower at Nagambadom, which is the northern entrance of Kottayam town. Later Kottayam Red Cross has shifted its office and all activities to this building. Most recently with the financial assistance from Canadian Red Cross the building is renovated in 2020- 2021 and now it is occupied with a most modern infrastructure like warehouse, auditorium, and conference hall, Office and training centre.
